Drawabox submission - Lesson 2
Update 171008: Critique from /u/Uncomfortable: Lesson 2 on reddit
I somehow ended up with 17 pages of organic forms. My early ones are pretty horrible, and even after 2 pages I was still terribly confused.
I’m surprised we don’t have a 250-organic-form challenge, but nothing’s technically stopping me from doing it.
These first textures are pretty bad. I didn’t spend enough time looking at reference or taking notes.
I only did 2 dissections, but I technically did 2 pages. I was happy with my improvement, so I figured it’d be best to move on.
Gets a bit better here in my opinion, although it’s still not perfect. The fox fur is way more believable than the yorkie fur, but it’s too noisy. The cork looks flat and the strawberry is unrecognizable because of how dark it is. The carpet foreshortens out of sync with the actual shape, so it doesn’t wrap quite right.
My favorites are the birchwood bark and the ice, although whether or not ice is a texture is debatable because most of the detail comes from the bubbles deep inside its guts.
And here’s a few pages of notes and texture analysis. It’s not as structured as the 25 texture challenge.
Exploratory texture thumbnails were mainly done with a 0.35mm Pentel EnerGel.
Intersections were definitely the hardest for me. Inconsistent foreshortening led to shapes that were separated in 3D and couldn’t be interpreted as intersecting. The ones that did intersect were irritatingly complicated.
On this first page I underestimated the difficulty and crammed as many forms as could on the page.
